When Your Job is Bigger Than Your Title

Is your job title lower than it should be? Does the level of your role imply the full scope of your responsibilities?

For example, you're a Director with a P&L in the tens of millions, but that same role would easily be considered VP level at another company.

If so, looking for a new role with the job title you deserve might be challenging. Recruiters and hiring managers want to hire someone with a current title that is at least as high as their open role. Director ➡ Director, VP ➡ VP. You get it.

So, how do you make sure your resume isn't passed over for being underqualified?

✅ Your resume and LinkedIn should indicate scope and outcomes
✅ For your resume, make sure your Professional Summary contains data showing scale. Use numbers: how much, how many, how long
✅ In your Select Achievements/Key Successes section, outline several large-scale successes with a focus on quantity
✅ In your Experience section, make sure to quantify the scope of your role in the bullet points

And remember that LinkedIn is your storefront, your branding tool, but it's also a search engine. Recruiters and hiring managers will find you based on your title.

✅ Don't be afraid to use your current title and your aspirational title under your name like this: Director | VP | Change Agent
✅ Your profile should highlight your expertise in contributing to initiatives using numbers that illustrate your level and your value.
