Achieve with Accountability
What do you envision for your life? Maybe you’re currently living it (and if so congratulations to you,) but I’m going to bet that most of us are not there yet.
If you’re like me, dreaming of life in a high-paying job that requires minimal work and unlimited free time, how do you plan on getting there?
Maybe it’s a dream that lives only in your head and you have no clue of how to get there. Maybe you’ve written about it in a journal or on a post-it, so you can look at it every day. Maybe you’ve chatted with a few friends or loved ones about your ideas, but not taken action. Maybe you’ve taken a few steps to get there, but aren’t fully satisfied with your results.
You see, it’s easy to dream, but it’s hard to make the dreams real. A large percentage of people give up on their New Year’s resolutions by June. (Seriously, it’s been studied.) Those who kept with their resolution and managed to reach their goals had two things in common:
Their goals were action-oriented (as opposed to avoidant-oriented)
They had a system of accountability in place.
Action-Oriented Goals
Action-oriented goals are also known as SMART goals in the corporate world. SMART stands for:
Specific - a clear focus and a deep understanding of the desired outcome
Meaningful - it is important to you
Action-Oriented - it has clearly defined steps
Realistic - it is actually achievable
Timely - it’s got a deadline and a sense of urgency
As it relates to your job search, SMART goals mean that you have clear focus, the change will make an impact on your life, you have a clear and realistic plan to move forward, and you want (or need) to do it now. If any of these points are lacking, you may not be motivated to see the job change through to the end.
But, if you have a SMART goal and you’re still struggling to make the change, then you might need Accountability.
System of Accountability
Studies have shown that those with accountability systems in place are 96% more likely to achieve their goals. This is because your support system can remind you of a digestible action plan that’s designed to help you reach your dreams one step at a time.
At the Resume Rehab, accountability can look like us asking how many jobs you’ve applied to (even if you’re interviewing elsewhere,) how many networking opportunities you’ve sought out (especially if networking gives you a cold sweat,) give you ideas on what else is out there (if you’re feeling discouraged,) and hold you accountable to your intentions (so that you don’t settle for a bad offer.)
Recently, we held a client accountable to their goals and they received an offer with a 33% increase in total comp. We also had a client recently turn down a job offer, because it didn’t align with their goals.
The Resume Rehab not only offers our clients expert advice, based on a cumulative 20+ years of experience, but we also offer a system of accountability so that you achieve your goals.
